Next year Dharmendra-Saira Banoo starrer Resham Ki Dori completes 50 years. Released today in 1974 it tells the story of siblings. Brother Ajit who while saving his sister Rajoo from a sexual assault ends up killing the oppressor in an accident. Ajit is sent to jail and after a long sentence in the prison emerges in a new avatar as Vinod. Woven in an engaging narrative spanning across three generations, the screenplay addressed many social issues, the most important being, the death of the textile industry and the problems associated with labour. Rajesh Khanna was the director’s first choice but when Khanna could not accommodate the dates, the director settled for Dharmendra.
