Women in Ramayan Part 37 / Maya Sita | Day 2864

By Uncategorized

Some say that it was not Sita who entered the fire, but Maya-Sita, a double of Sita.
Apparently the devtas saved Sita from Ravana’s chariot and replaced her with Maya, an
illusion. The woman Ravana brought to Lanka was the illusion of Sita and the one who met
Ram on the battlefield after the war was over was also Maya Sita.
According to a version of the fable, Ram disowned Sita because she had stayed in another
man’s home.  Sita was enraged by his reaction and asked brother Laksman to ignite a fire.
She said she was pure and will emerge from the flames unblemished. So Maya Sita jumped
into the fire. Mayta was destroyed, and Agni restored the real Sita to Rama.

Women in Ramayan Part 34 | Lankini | | Day 2858

By Uncategorized

Lankinin was the security guard of Ravana’s Lanka. Legend has it that Lankini was originally
the security guard of heaven but due to a mistake, Lord Brahma cursed her to become a
rakshasi and since then, she was demoted to become a guard at Lanka. But Lord Brahma had
blessed her with a boon. The day she was hit by a monkey and she spat blood, she would
revive to her original avatar. And this happens when Lord Hanuman crosses the ocean in
search of mother Sita.
Hanuman has to overcome several obstacles before he can make it to his goal and these
include rakshasis Simhika and Surasa mentioned in earlier episodes). Simhika was the
daughter of Prajapati Kashyapa and Ditti and the sister of asura Hiranyakashipu and
Hiranyaksha according to Vishnu Purana.
The puranas say that while Surasa represents the element akasha (sky), Simhika and Lankini
represent water and earth respectively.

Maya or Mayāsura is a figure in Hindu mythology. He is king of the danavas, a demonic
race, and famous for his brilliant architecture. His most important creations include the
Mayasabha (the hall of illusions) for the Pandavas and Tripura (the three cities) for the sons
of Tarakasura. He is also mentioned as the father-in-law of Ravana in the epic
Ramayana. The Uttara Kanda of the epic Ramayana mentions that during his visit to swarga
(heaven), Maya married an apsara (heavenly nymph) named Hema. They had two sons —
Mayavi and Dundubhi — and a daughter Mandodari, who later married Ravana, the rakshasa
ruler of Lanka and the main antagonist of the epic.
Swayamprabha also and apsara was the friend of Hema and entrusted with the responsibility
of safeguarding the creation of Maya, when he was slayed by Lord Indra.  On their journey to
discover Sita the monkeys are trapped inside the Mayavi cave and enamoured by the
blossoming trees full of fruits and the fresh water streams. The garden is scented and the
splendour is erotic but if the monkeys drink the water or eat the fruits, they are cursed to
remain in the land forever and they cannot do that because they are committed to Ram to find
Sita. Svayamprabha is impressed by their devotion and aids them to find a way out of the trap
and leads them to Lanka.
