Some say that it was not Sita who entered the fire, but Maya-Sita, a double of Sita.
Apparently the devtas saved Sita from Ravana’s chariot and replaced her with Maya, an
illusion. The woman Ravana brought to Lanka was the illusion of Sita and the one who met
Ram on the battlefield after the war was over was also Maya Sita.
According to a version of the fable, Ram disowned Sita because she had stayed in another
man’s home.  Sita was enraged by his reaction and asked brother Laksman to ignite a fire.
She said she was pure and will emerge from the flames unblemished. So Maya Sita jumped
into the fire. Mayta was destroyed, and Agni restored the real Sita to Rama.
