Elephant God arrives – Day 965

By Uncategorized

Ganpati

Lord Mayureshwar

It is that time of the year when the city celebrates the elephant God coming home. It is the time the priests work over time because they are summoned by families to perform Pranpratishtha.

I have been hosting Lord Ganpati at my home for almost two decades but resisted the tradition of Pranpratishtha. I disbelieve that a human being holds the power to put life into an idol. So I bring the deity home as a friend and a companion. I’m always excited when I go to fetch him and like to believe that he is excited at the idea of coming to my home too.

I just know when I spot him that he is the one for me. He occupies the privileged position in my abode. I wake him up every morning with a lamp and chat him up while serving him breakfast, lunch and dinner.

He watches my routine, my life and I share my anxieties with him. By now he is familiar with all my friends and relatives and they seek his blessings like they would from a senior member in the family.

Unlike other friends I know, I don’t entertain him with blaring music all day. I don’t think he wants company all day too. Let us not forget that he is a writer and like all artistes needs his creative space. I provide him with paper and pen and we agree that we will do our respective writings. While I punch my routine stuff on the computer, my special friend writes destinies.

In between, we take a coffee break and share what we have written.  In the ten days that follow, my companion becomes a part of my life and I’m heavy hearted when it is time for him to leave. I’m depressed when I feed him dahi-shakkar for a safe journey in to the rowdy, overcrowded ocean.  I’m depressed when I whisper sweet nothings into his ear as he leaves my front door.

He does not express it but I know he is as sad to leave me and I have faith that he has heard my woes and absorbed my dreams and will make them all come true soon.

Walking to the ocean and immersing him into the water is the toughest thing to do. In moments he turns to ashes the one who was the focus of my life for ten days. When I come home, I cannot bear the empty space and I imagine him in every corner of the house.

In the night, I wake up suddenly, sensing he has come back and rush to check his throne. Is that the reason elders ask you not to clear his belongings till the next morning. I pacify myself that he will come soon and that another year is just 12 months away.

Now you know why we say ‘Ganpati Bappa morya, pudhchya varshi lavkaryaa…’

Akira is inspirational – Day 964

By Films

image

Film Review: Akira

Producer-Director: A R Murugadoss
Cast: Sonakshi Sinha, Anurag Kashyap, Konkona Sen
Rating: 3.5 stars

Based on Santha Kumar written 2011 Tamil film Mounathe Guru the film begins in Jodhpur where Akira daughter of a mute school teacher(Atul Kulkarni)is inculcated to stand up for truth. Her father trains her in Karate so that she can fight her battles and in doing so lands in the remand home for three years.

Fortunately, she does not carry the baggage and on release shifts to Mumbai to pursue her education.

The plus: Undoubtedly the writing, director Murugadoss along with Sanath Kumar, story and dialogues, Karan Singh Rathore diligently define every character and sub-text. The best thing about the film is that it’s not only about Akira and women empowerment. The message travels beyond gender gaze to voice multiple social concerns like parental guidance, disability, corruption in police force, college ragging and the working woman, in this case a pregnant cop.

Other things that add to the engaging narrative is the hard hitting action, editor Sreekar Prasad’s sharp editing and film’s talented supporting cast. As the pregnant crime branch cop, Konkona Sen Sharma is underplayed and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap in the role of ACP is outstanding.

Sonakshi Sinha plays Akira with confidence and trust; she is as believable as the Karate queen hitting the villains as the responsible student in the classroom. This is her most challenging role as an actor physically and she gives it her best shot.

The minus: the second half is repetitive and the climax exaggerated, some issues like the college bully remain unresolved but one overlooks it for the noble message.

Akira is about empowering women, motivating students and meant for all those who believe in change. It is inspirational, responsible and most important, unpredictable. It is the chilling story of the most imperfect murder.

Island City is splendid – Day 963

By Films

HO00003668Film Review: Island City

Writer-Director: Ruchika Oberoi
Cast: Vinay Pathak, Amruta Subhash and Tanistha Chatterjee
Rating: 3.5 stars

Short stories are most difficult to write and short films even more difficult to film but Ruchika Oberoi excels in stringing three short stories together — the link being the island city and the mundane lives of those caught in the race. The film is about these unforgettable characters and their mundane, morbid lives.
The first, Fun Committee tells about a middle-aged bachelor trapped in a routine. To revive his lowly spirits his office has a plan of amusement forced on to the staff. Vinay Pathak is offered an opportunity live life to the fullest which is comic and tragic at the same time.

The second, The Ghost in the Machine concentrates on a man in a hospital’s intensive care unit. While his family is concerned about his survival they are momentarily relieved of his tyranny. His wife Amruta Subhash runs the show in his absence without imposing fear or power on other members of the family. Will it be the same when her husband recovers and returns home?

The final, Contact is about a seemingly ordinary girl/ Tanishtha Chatterjee who leads an ordinary life at a printing press. She is oppressed by her immediate family and her fiancé and one day, discovers love sealed inside a mysterious envelope. Will it last or is it just a dream?

What appeals about of the film is the amazing narrative and the characters all sprinkled with astute observations and delightful insights. Without beating drums, Oberoi raises multiple issues related to pressure and mental wellness and life without passion.

Island City should be watched for the sparkling performances and for good cinema. Take a bow Ruchika Oberoi.

Sumit Khetan

Sumit Khetan is the man who choreographed Ayushmaan Khuraana in the very popular song ‘Paani da rang’ and ‘Rum whisky’, who had created magic in reality shows like Comedy Nights with Kapil and Rang De and Colors Holi. Well, he is now set to add color to Khamakhah Yun Hi shot in Thailand. The film is unusual in the sense it features real life incidences of the medical world incorporated in a mature love story. The movie ends on a very different note sending out a special message to the society on extra marital relationships. Produced under the banner of Reverberation films Pvt Ltd the choreography of the film is something to watch out for.

Vidyut Jammwal: Fitter than the fittest – Day 959

By Films
Tue.Vidyut Jammwal-1

Vidyut Jammwal

Director Vipul Shah introduced him as an action hero and now Vidyut Jammwal has always become synonymous with dare devil action. Recently the actor had to perform some difficult scenes with the stuntmen wrapped in fiber chest guards but when it was time for action, the actor came on so strong that he ended up collapsing all the stuntmen, fortunately none of them were injured. I’m not surprised that Vidyut is proud of his sculpted body, he should be.
