Lyricists Win (Day 1087)

By | Music | No Comments

The IPRS conflict has been going on for some years now, ever since music companies seized control of the governance of the organization, leaving lyricists and music composers out in the cold.

After the Copyright Act was amended in 2012, it gave lyricists, writers, and composers clear safeguards to secure and protect their rights, still, some issues remained unresolved. Now, finally, the entire conflict has come to a resolution. An official letter from IPRS confirms the following:

One, IPRS’ full compliance with Indian Copyright Law by instituting changes in the Articles of Association (AoA) and MoA to ensure that lyricists and composers get an equal say in the running of the organization, and in framing its rules. Two, withdrawal of all court cases aimed at keeping lyricists and composers out of the governing bodies of the IPRS.  Three, the payment of an equal share of royalty as per Copyright Rules to lyricists and composers and importantly, all outstanding royalties to be cleared forthwith. Four, administering of all rights that belong to lyricists and composers…

The changes have been incorporated in the Articles and in the MoA have been approved by the EGM held for this purpose in February this year and the Script Writers Association ( SWA) is hopeful that with its new constitution, IPRS is now ready to function like a genuine copyright society of lyricists and composers, to administer all their rights and ensure that due royalties are paid to them.

SWA is happy with the reform and applauded all members who fought tirelessly to reform IPRS. Owing to the very unfortunate developments of the past few years, IPRS was seen as a society of questionable motives, but not anymore.

Jagjit Singh Now & Forever – Day 933

Jagjit Singh

Jagjit Singh

Tum Bin set a benchmark for the soulful album which struck a chord because of the iconic song sung by the legendary singer Jagjit Singh. Singh is no more but producer Bhushan Kumar and director Anubhav Sinha have reunited again for Tum Bin 2 and are paying a tribute to the Ghazal maestro integral part of Tum Bin family.

Ankit Tiwari has recreated Jagjit Singh’s iconic number, ‘Koi Fariyaad’, from Tum Bin (2001) which is now titled ‘Teri Fariyaad’. The song has the original voice of Jagjit Singh and Rekha Bharadwaj who has already mesmerized the audience. Alive concert to pay tribute to Jagjit Singh on his death anniversary was an evening to remember.

Happy Birthday Lataji – Day 916

Lata Mangeshkar, the nightingale of India

Everybody knows that Lata Mangeshkar became popular after rendering ‘Aayega ayegaa aanewala …’for Madhubala in Mahal. She was a little girl at that time and to sustain her mood after several retakes the music director would tempt her with Cadbury chocolates. For a long time movie goers did not know her name because it was not a practice to announce the names of the singers on the radio at that time and a lot of people assumed that the song was sung by the actress Madhubala herself.

People were curious to know about the singer however and on public demand the All India Radio started giving information about the playback singers. Post the release of Mahal Madhubala made a condition in her contract that all her film songs will have the voice of Lata Mangeshkar.

That was the beginning of her journey and in time to come she was and continues to be celebrated as Goddess Saraswati of Indian cinema.

Of Artistes & Legends – Day 904

By | Music | No Comments

hungarian-festSome artistes shine in solo recitals and Hungarian Moroccan pianist, Marouan Benabdallah not yet thirty-five, is one of them. It was only recently that Benabdallah performed debut recitals at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Aspen Music Festival, Teatro Colon with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, the Castleton Festival Orchestra under the baton of Lorin Maazel and he is already raring to perform more concerts. Formally trained at the Bela Bartok Conservatory and the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, he was presented with the Medal of the Hungarian Parliament for his achievement in music, an honor he shares with such artists as Placido Domingo, José Cura and others.

Anybody associated with theatre will agree that Abraham Alkazi is a legend and the fabulous exhibition titled The Theatre of E. Alkazi that received rave reviews in New Delhi early this year, has been invited to NGMA, Mumbai, where it opened on September 9, 2016. Everyone associated to Alkazi is aware about how special this is because it is here where Alkazi began his dream and spent his formative years living, working and developing his ideas on the teaching and dissemination of theatre.

The exhibition will be on for five weeks, ending on October 18, 2016, Alkazi’s 91st birthday and to make the event more exciting there will be curated walks through the exhibition.

Digitizing Superhits – Day 903

By | Music | No Comments

yejo-mohabbat-haiRemember Rajesh Khanna dancing to ‘Ye jo mohabbat hai…’ in Kati Patang? The entire nation swung to the song sung by Kishore Kumar and composed by R.D. Burman. So many years later the classic number has been has been recreated by singer Ravi Chaudhary and features Kangna Sharma and Danish Bhatt. Directed by Himanshu Bhatt and produced by 3 Brothers Film Company and Saregama, the song has seen a constant traction! The recreated track which was launched today on the music label’s official YouTube channel is receiving good response.

The song that defined a trend in the 70s has become a digital sensation in 2016.We are living in technical times when everything is possible and the repackaging is not always a good experience but we have to endure it.
